November's contest blessed my heart. I'm going to come back and read these comments when I'm down, because they were all awesome! However, random.org's randomly generated winners are:

Jacque of jacquelyngreen.blogspot.com - she's a heckuva photographer and has a cute family that she blogs about, too.

Janae, aka [livejournal.com profile] matties_mom! She doesn't have anything in her journal, yet, but I'm hopeful. ;)

[livejournal.com profile] elle_blessing of Seattle. Or the Pacific Northwest area. As opposed to the [livejournal.com profile] elle_blessing of Wisconsin. Gah, I'm SUCH a dork. Sorry.

I'll get Elle's in the mail ASAP, and give Janae's and Jacque's to you in person!

WooHOO for being thankful!

When I've had more than one cup of coffee and have thought about it for more than two seconds, I'll post December's contest.

Until then!

NOVEMBER'S CONTEST:

In the United States, November = Thanksgiving. You seriously cannot swing a cat without hitting a pumpkin,a cornucopia or a weird, creepy, cartoon scarecrow. However, I acknowledge that American holidays do not necessarily resonate with the rest of the world. That said, I still think being thankful is super important in life. Telling people that you appreciate them is affirming. Being thankful, even in the midst of difficulties, is an important thing to me, because I know no matter what troubles I may have, I'm still better off than a lot of people in the world. Being thankful is awesome.

So.

Tell me what you're thankful for. Tell me why.

Easy, right? Then, with a wave of my magic wand (or random.org) three people chosen at random (Because how can I judge who's more thankful, I ask you?) will receive one of these bad boys.

Easy peasy. Go forth and comment here.

I had all sorts of fun entries for Halloween, and I've been reading them when I've had time over the past few days. So, here goes.

It's a 24 oz. Starbucks Insulated mug. I got some for family members this year and I got one for Christmas from my friend Stephanie last year, and I use it all the time. It's awesome. You'll love it. You need it. So click and enter before I drag myself out of bed and check my email on December 1st.

Holy cow. December 1st. That's a whole year of contests. I've been overwhelmed with the responses each month, and very proud to call you all my friends. Thanks for entering and playing along each month! It's been fun!

No one wants to win a cute mug for their coffee/hot cocoa/spiced tea?

Enter the monthly contest by writing a spooky (or funny or scary or whatever) Halloween story and win a mug like this:

Any takers?

October's contest. Should anyone be interested.

I love Halloween. LOVE. Even though the politically correct part of me should say that my favorite holiday is Jesus' birthday, or the day set aside solely to give thanks, I'm here to tell you that my very favorite holiday is Halloween. Costumes? Candy? Dressing up? Going to parties? Punch that steams served from a cauldron? What's not to love?

So in the spirit of all hallow's eve, the winners of this month's contest will have to write a story about the holiday. In whatever fashion you like, with whatever pairings you see fit. My favorites are the following:

Bones: Booth/Brennan
NCIS: Tony/Ziva
HP: Draco/Ginny, Pansy/Ron
Firefly: River/Jayne, Malcolm/Inara
Supernatural: (Brother fic is fine...but no slash, please)
True Blood: Eric/Sookie, Hoyt/Jessica
Castle: Castle/Beckett
Twilight: Jasper/Alice, Emmett/Rosalie
Friday Night Lights: Any ship. I'm not picky.
Vampire Diaries: Damon/Elena

But those are just a jumping off point. Other pairings and even original fiction are good, too. I just enjoy a well written story.

First and second place will receive one of these cute Vera Bradley covered mugs for all your wintertime hot beverages:

PRIZES! )

And if there's a third place, they'll get something cool, too.

Okay, friend's list! Ready? Set? Write!

(Carrie and the children run through the morning routine, hair combing, breakfast eating, tooth brushing, and she explains the schedule for later in the day.)

Carrie. So when you get home from school, I'll have packed your bag and I'll take you out to Grandma's and Grandpa's house for the weekend.

Ethan. (Frowns) But Dad's gone.

Carrie. (has only had a sip of coffee at this point in the morning) Mmmhm.

Ethan. If dad's gone, then who'll protect you if the zombies attack? I'm in charge of that when he's gone.

Carrie. There's going to be a zombie attack this weekend? And you're in charge of what, exactly?

Ethan. There might be a zombie attack this weekend. And I'm in charge of shooting them. You don't know how to shoot a gun.

Carrie. And you do?

Ethan. I can figure it out. If you're not protected, they'll get you.

Aaron. (Munches on toast) Makes sense.

Carrie. (under breath) None of this makes sense.

Ethan. I'll stay, just in case.

Carrie. No, pumpkin, I'll be fine.

Ethan. (Frowns) Are you sure?

Carrie. (Wishes to God for having drunk more coffee before having this conversation) Yes. Katie and Abbey (the Labrador retrievers) are here. They'll protect me.

Ethan. Katie would, but Abbey will be worthless.

Aaron. (munches on toast) That's true.

****

Just another Friday at our house. )
So I have lots to say.

I have lots to say in general, usually, (maybe I should work on that) but more specifically, I have a lot to catch you up on, having had my life eaten by the theatre for the last week.

Minutia of life and contest stuff under the cut... )

So that's it. Well, no, there was probably more, but I've forgotten it, due to age and general business of the brain. In any case, I hope you all have a great week!

Love, love!
Holy cow. It's September.

It's nearly fall, which makes me super happy. I'm sitting out on the back porch enjoying the cool morning weather with the dogs and a cup of coffee, admiring the roses, crepe myrtle and butterfly bush (that Frank is very nearly obscured by - win), and the lawn that my 10 year-old mowed yesterday.

Everyone should have a 10 year-old to mow for them. It's the best.

So the poetry contest wasn't a hit. But I did have some clever entries!

The winners were [livejournal.com profile] leaper182 , [livejournal.com profile] seegrim amd [livejournal.com profile] mynuet , who'll need to tell me their color preference for their bags. Thanks for the entries, girls. They made me smile. :)

September's contest
: is going to be a the same as one of the month's past. You tell me which pairing you want to write, and I'll give you a prompt! (Or I'll give you both - I don't mind doing some of the work.) Fun times. No word limit, no parameters, low pressure, low stress, and you have 'til I drag myself out of bed on October 1 to reply in a comment to THIS POST.

Winners for September will receive their choice of a GAP or Old Navy gift certificate. Or if you're overseas and want to enter, something equally wonderful. I love Old Navy. I have a billion dresses (not hyperbole) from that store. They also have cute accessories and shoes. So. Comment to get a prompt, write, comment again with the story, and win a pair of pants from a chain store. Good times, right?

Now I'm off to get the house ready for home group and to spend the day cooking. I'm making Almond-Bacon-Cheese-Crostini, anitpasto kababs, peanut butter cookies, chocolate cake truffles, artichoke dip, and a small platter of fruit and veggies. Don't you wish you were coming over tonight?

You're invited, by the way. I do love a drop in. ;)
Well, technically, it was more like a mid-morning snack. And it wasn't strictly ice cream*.

Let me back up.

Okay. I'm on this hardcore, awful, brutal diet, right? And achieving results, so... yay, sort of. And I guess I cheated. Fell off the wagon. Tied one on, because... get ready for this...

I HAD A BANANA.

In what fascist diet dictatorship is a banana cheating? I don't want to live in a world like that. Do you?  I didn't think so.  *solidarity fist bump*

My husband would love a world like that. He hates bananas. Thinks they're responsible for 1/16th of the evil in the world. You'll have to ask him about the things that comprise the other 15/16th. I'm sure he's told me, but he talks a LOT. I can't be expected to remember everything, can I?

So. Today I give you a tutorial. This is how to make ice cream* with one ingredient. You're intrigued, right?

Recipe under the cut! )

And there's just a few more hours til August's contest is over.  Go write a poem and win a prize!
If you're into reading Ron/Pansy, here you go.

I got runner-up. :)

Read Here at [info]carriescribbles

I'm completely exhausted.  Nolan and I went to a work call at the theatre today where I painted wood to look like... wood.

Oh, scenic painting.  How I've missed you.

Hope everyone's having a spectacular weekend!

...but Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a giant, steaming, pile of cinematic poo.

And I hear it's really close at [livejournal.com profile] ronpansy_ldws ! If you love me, will you vote?

And even if you don't. I'm not picky. :)

Hello, August 4th. You totally snuck up on me.

It's been a heckuva week, rife with emotional hangovers, nightmares about tank-escaping Crawdads, (Ethan: But we could get him a Crawmom! And they could have Crawkids!) hours of poolside reading and spa days. We're trying to cram all the summer we can into these last few weeks before school starts.

The winners from July's recipe contest [livejournal.com profile] maureen with a kickin' chili recipe, and [livejournal.com profile] filia_umbrae, who won even though she submitted something with a gourd as one of the ingredients. :D I'm totally making all of the submissions, even the pumpkin muffins, which were described as "scarfable." We shall see! Look for your prizes in the mail before the 15th, girls. That's my goal. ;) Congrats to you both!

August's contest!

You know I'm all about a haiku. Haikus make me irrationally happy, and I feel a little fancy reading and writing them. I'm going to confess that I also love a good Limerick, because, you know, I love to laugh. And so this month your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write as many haikus and limericks as your heart desires IN A REPLY TO THIS POST, before I drag myself out of bed on September first. The winners will receive a $25 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble, and one of my handmade bags (new design!).

If you're unsure how to write either of these poems, just click on the links above. It's easy! And fun! And free! You can do it!

Now I'm off to register Ethan for Middle School. And get some Botox on the way because that makes me feel SO OLD.

JULY'S CONTEST:

This month we're going to give the writers a rest and do a little something for all you cooks and bakers out there!

Hit me with your best recipe, one that is tried and true, and never fails to get yummy sounds for those who eat it. It can be sweet, savory, main course, appetizers, dessert or a how-to that you think we need to see. If you want to go all out, you can do a picture step-by-step on your own journal and link your reply in a comment to this post, or you can simply post the recipe, whichever you're most comfortable with.

The winner will receive a super cute Anthropologie apron and some kitchen-y things that might come in handy for future cooking endeavors. The runners up will get a little something, too! Entries must be received by the time I drag myself out of bed on August 1. Good luck and have fun in the kitchen!

You can enter HERE.
The Reporter Frock Grosgrain Giveaway because of the cuteness, and this one from Effortless Anthropologie, because of the epic scale of potential cuteness in the form of a $250 giftcard.

Makes my little contests seem puny. :)

Thanks for the heads up, [livejournal.com profile] xoxrhapsodyxox!

[livejournal.com profile] abitofayla, [livejournal.com profile] jessicakmalfoy and an anonymous comment entry won jars of plum jam!

Congratulations!

Ayla, I've got quite the collection of stuff to send you, when you're at an address for more than a week. :)

I've been so pleased with the turnout for these contests! They bring me joy. :D

All the entries for last month, should you want to read them, can be found here. Go give the authors some love!

First place this month goes to [livejournal.com profile] abitofayla, for her fantastic untitled Ziva-centric NCIS drabble. The voices were spot on. The girl knows her NCIS. :)

Second Place goes to [livejournal.com profile] leigh_adams, for a super sweet and smooshy R/P that made me all melty and smile like a dork.

Third place tie goes to [livejournal.com profile] goeungurl and [livejournal.com profile] filia_umbrae, both with Bones drabbles that made me ridiculously happy. :D LHM, I CANNOT WAIT FOR SEPTEMBER AND THE COFFEE CART. Ahem.

A round of applause for all these winners!

And your prizes will be mailed way earlier than last month (except Ayla? Let me know where to send yours, world traveler). Keep an eye out for them!

So Aaron had an accident while we were in Arlington (I forget how, because honestly! Who can remember every bump and bruise these boys get?) that caused some trauma this morning.

Mildly horrifying/cute kid story under the cut. :) )

******
He's cheeky. Wonder where he gets that?

A hundred bucks says I find that nasty thing while I'm sweeping next week. *sigh*

And Ethan finally got to spend part of the money his Papa Jim sent him for his birthday! So we went out and got the Harry Potter Lego video game. It's SO stinking cute. And clever! And maybe a bit scandalous... in CoS when Dobby the House Elf works his mojo on Lucius Malfoy, after Harry frees the elf with a sock, instead of the violent treatment of being thrown 20 feet, Lucius' lego trousers disappear, leaving him with hot pink briefs.

Oh, Lego game developers. You slay me, putting stuff in to entertain the moms, too. ;)

I'm off to the grocery store to load up on stuff for the fourth and our dinner party tonight, but I'll post the winners of June's contest and my exciting (yeah, probably only to me) idea for July's contest before I leave town again!
