There is magic in the theatre, the theatre is magic....

There comes a time in the life of every show when it really, really, needs an audience. I vaguely remember when I thought the lines from Over the Tavern were funny, but that time is long past. I've repeated and heard all the lines in the show so many times that nothing could make me crack a smile. Thank God for the crew who arrived on Sunday and laughed. And the photographer cracked up in a few places. It reminds me that, yes, we are in fact performing a comedy.

Here's a little set photoessay, followed by pictures of the dress from hell.

When you start out, the walls are taped off on the floor, and the director puts stuff where real set pieces will eventually go, for example: The Orange Home Depot bucket was the TV. We spare no expense at ALT.

Then the walls start going up and you get a more firm sense of spatial relations and some permanent set pieces.
(Pictured: Joseph and Jeff (seated), the director.)

First layer of paint and kitchen cabinets.

A sofa! Finally! A hideous lamp in the corner!

Starting to look like a home. From left: Mark (my co-star) Jeff, (director), Nick (facing away from the camera) and Joseph.

Me in the dressing room taking a picture of the dress from hell AFTER last night's dress rehearsal. I won. Everyone LOVES that dress. Ain't no scrap of silk besting me, yo.

YOU BEAT ERMA!! She has bent to your will. Good job Carrie! *cheers!*

*giggle* for earnest, we don't even have stuff taped down. We're rehearsing on a stage that's not ours. I'll have to do this for our set as well :D It was neat to see, thanks for sharing!

And I have the first fitting for my country dress... they're not letting me wear the super awesome dress... but they're making both my outfits from scratch. so, draw? (but the original one was ivory and now I have to wear *pink*

How fun! I'm happy to finally see the place you've been spending so much time at!

And hooray! for the dress, too! You're awesomely talented, you.

I had no doubt that you would kick that dresses butt! Nice bag you have there, by the way.

Yay for showing the dress who's boss :)

I love the theatre! Will there be pictures of the play?

I think the dress is actually kinda pretty. *hangs head*

But yay for learning how the magic gets made. Thanks for sharing. :D

The dress looks gorgeous (from what I can see of it, anyway. What's with the flash?!). Definitely worth all the cursing that went into it. :D

Oh yes, that looks like a 1950s (or 40s? my vintage is lapsing) dress from hell. Is it accompanied by pearls, high heels, a vacuum cleaner and (one can hope) a cocktail on stage? (or do you just do that around the house to get in character? :D)
