persephone33: (who gives a crap?)
persephone33 ([personal profile] persephone33) wrote2008-02-01 08:17 am

It's a little too much reality for a Friday morning, I think.

Would anyone like to tell me why a child's medical emergencies only happen between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., when all normal people are trying to freaking sleep?

And why they never go to Nolan's side of the bed?

(Actually, I can answer that.  They could've lost an arm and be bleeding out, and Nolan would say, "You're fine.  Go back to bed.")

So.  The boys are at my bedside in their little boxer-briefs, shivering, and Ethan tells me, "I can't breathe."

If you don't have children who have had upper respiratory troubles since they were 15 months old, words simply cannot express how much you hate those words.  I immediately go into Super!Mom mode.   Like I hadn't been asleep for the last 5 hours already.  Out comes the nebulizer, the Xopenex, and the pedia care & tylenol.  I sit with him while we do a double treatment, and he goes back to sleep rather easily.  I, on the other hand, did not.  And as a little extra added bonus, I think I've got it, too.

His fever keeps coming back, but the flu and strep tests were negative when I took him to the doctor yesterday morning.  Any advice from you moms on the f-list?  If not, we hunker down and wait it out.

Aaron is an iron man.  The child never gets sick, and he's a little indignant that Ethan's getting to stay home from school again.

Please let us get better before we have to spend 16 hours in a car.  Pretty please?  With sugar on top?

And a little side of delightful:  [profile] reenie1sent me MUSIC yesterday, and it's freaking AWESOME, you don't even know.  I'm listening to the Best of Led Zepplin (according to her) on the car ride home, looking at Ethan in the rear view mirror to make sure he's alright, thinking that he's going to make a comment about the new music.  Because he notices when I get something new.  He didn't say a word.  I chalk  it up to him being sick.

Then, I get him home and tuck him beneath a blanket on the couch, and  stick in Bridge to Terabithia, and he says in a small little voice, "Mom?  That CD in the car rocked."

I have to agree.  It totally did.  :D

Ohhh. Poor kid. I hate nebulizer treatments. Right now my asthma has come back full force, and I can't figure out what it is either. Tell him to hang in there! I know how much it sucks not being able to breathe.

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You poor thing. Asthma sucks.

[identity profile] airmidm.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, Carrie, I feel for you. *hugs*

The only thing worse than having a sick kiddo is having a sick kiddo when you are sick too. The only advice I have is riding it out since the tests came back negative.

If the Tylenol doesn't help, you can try a dose of Motrin two hours after a dose of Tylenol and alternate them until the fever is gone. (Every military doc I've ever taken my kiddos to had instructed me to do that with stubborn fevers.)

Ohh! Freeze pops work well to, not only to settle upset stomachs but to help bring down the fever. I always make my own with juice or watered down Gatorade.

I have to agree with Ethan, Zeppelin does rock!

I hope your day gets better and that both you and the little man feel better quickly.

[identity profile] airmidm.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. I hope your day got a bit better.

[identity profile] mandy-caliga.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh. I had asthma when I was little, but all I remember is being made to suck on gross-tasting puffers, so I can't give any advice. You're all in my prayers, though. Well, you're always in my prayers, but special "get well" ones are in order this time!

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, I really appreciate it.

[identity profile] brendanm720.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Asthma sucks enough without being sick on top of it. Hope he's better soon.

Speaking of better...
I'm not a mom, but I do have some advice. If the cultures came back negative, it means it's probably a virus; and viri you usually have to ride out. Ibuprofin will bring his fever down, and a little Vernors to wash it down with never hurt anyone.

Also: RE: Zep...

Brock is impressed with your son's taste in music.

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ginger Ale. Hm. Maybe he'd drink that.

I nod to Brock. My son does have excellent taste in music.

1. *HUGSIES* for both you and Ethan. I hope you both are on the getting better side of things soon!

2. I totally just bought the whole studio collection of Led Zeppelin for my Matt for xmas ... still need to burn all that ... woot! for xmas presents to both of us ;) (though honestly, I'm more of a Floyd fan, but when you're choosing between Zeppelin and Floyd, it's kinda a win win)

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I have Dark Side of the Moon in Vinyl. :)

[identity profile] rainpuddle13.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be a little indignant too! I hope Ethan recovers quickly :)

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, Pud.

Have you seen the youtube that's going around of TF playing guitar? (squeee)

[identity profile] rainpuddle13.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He posted one last night with him singing! *SQUEE*

He's so frakking adorable!

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw it this morning. I melted into a little puddle of goo. :)

[identity profile] rainpuddle13.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, seriously, that boy should not be that talented or adorable. It was funny last night when he posted that (like 3 seconds after I'd just checked) I got 8 emails from fellow fangirls!

[identity profile] jandjsalmon.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ummm... does it make me a nerd that I had a friend make it an .mp3 and now it's on a burned disc to listen to in my CAR?? ;)

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... It makes me a dork because I'm jealous. :)

[identity profile] jandjsalmon.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
*cough*Check your email from yousendit*cough*

[identity profile] rainpuddle13.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Uhhh no! I ♥ Tom Felton loving nerds :)

I've finally come up with a prompt for my contest that will run in early summer after the fic exchange. You interested in judging still?

[identity profile] jandjsalmon.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
OF FRAKKING COURSE!!

Sign me up to judge! WOOT!

[identity profile] rainpuddle13.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Fabulous! I'll fill you in on details as time draws closer. *squee*

[identity profile] jandjsalmon.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm uber-excited! Thanks for remembering! :)

[identity profile] rainpuddle13.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I just need to find a 4th judge and we'll all be set!

[identity profile] michael-caliga.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
*coughs*

How about me?

(Carrie, not Michael)

[identity profile] rainpuddle13.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I was about to say...

Anyway, Carrie, absolutely not! You have to write something! Remember you won the thing last time!

[identity profile] sue-bridehead.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll tell you why kids go to mommies, and this is from some book I read (probably something by Brazelton). Dads are for fun, where moms mean 'business'. That is, we look after their actual needs. Dads are...well, basically nonessential personnel. ;) Which is why your kids will always come to you when it's serious.

You know, I have learned to love Led Zeppelin. My kids think they are the greatest rock band ever.

I hope you guys get better before the trip.

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Nonessential personell. *snort*

Thanks.

[identity profile] caramelsilver.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell Aaron that there is no reason to be jealous at his brother for being home from school. It sucks being sick and the sick child would rather be at school, I'm sure.

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ethan would definitely rather be at school. Aaron, however, likes to watch TV and play video games, and he feels that school interferes with this plan...

[identity profile] caramelsilver.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I can see how that pesky thing called school interferes with his plan=)

[identity profile] seegrim.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. What a cruddy night, I'm so sorry. I hope everything starts improving rapidly.

And HOORAY! for new music!

And I probably won't be able to scene until this evening, sorry. More details about that later.

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I MISS you!

[identity profile] jandjsalmon.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs you*

Sick kids suck. Here's hoping you all feel more rested and healthy tomorrow. :(

[identity profile] persephone33.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, Jess. Me, too.

[identity profile] dragonsangel68.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to know why they always come to our side of the bed too ;P It sounds like this is the ride out sort *hugs* I hope you're both feeling a lot better before you hit the road!

[identity profile] maureen.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly Ethan gets his excellent taste in music from his mother.

I hope you both feel better soon!

[identity profile] 60sfreak.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, Ethan earns one hundred cool points for liking Zeppelin. Rock on, dude. :-)

Asthma can be very scary, feeling your lungs tighten up and your breaths get shallower. I'm glad he's okay now. Never liked nebulizers. :-P

[identity profile] 13oct.livejournal.com 2008-02-03 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* I so feel your pain! Hope things are better now.
