I read that book. It's actually really cool, and the principle at its heart could be about a girl raised by any animal, so don't worry, it's not teaching him to like dolphins in particular, just appreciate humankind and the gift that is language. Never fear.
Also, it makes me feel really young-- that I read that book in school and now your son is, too. Granted, it was 11 years ago for me, but still. Gah!
