So this afternoon, I hear the boys playing with the neighbor kids in the alley behind our house. (These kids are really nice, their names are Kirstie (13) and Daniel (10) and the boys love them.) They all play together really well, and Kirstie has done a little babysitting for me. She's only ever done it over the summer when her mom is 50 feet away, but we're going to a wedding on Saturday, and I really need a sitter.
Mothers will go to great lengths to find and keep a sitter. I've promised a lot of things to a lot of people.
So I go out, in the guise of taking the trash to the dumpster, but in reality my plan is to pounce on Kirstie and give her my winningest smile, and hope that she's available to sit for the boys when I need her.
Anyway, they're playing a game, and it's pretty obvious that Kirstie has Aaron on her team to help him out. They score a point and he hugs her around her waist, and she pats him, and it's cuuuuuuuute.
Boys. Hi, Mom!
Me. Hey. What are you up to?
Ethan. Volleyball.
Aaron. (jubilantly) We're winning!
Me. (smiles) Hey, Kirstie? Can you sit on Saturday? (gives another smile)
(Kirstie holds up a finger, goes in to ask her mother. Aaron stands stock still, his eyes squeezed shut and his fingers crossed)
Kirstie. (comes back outside) I can sit for you.
(Aaron, who is standing behind her, makes a fist and brings his elbow into his waist, and mouths, "YES.")
