I had this at a birthday/anniversary/fourth of July party last week and it was one of those desserts I found myself thinking about all week. So much so that I decided I had to make one myself. It's moist and sweet inside with a caramelized and crunchy outer crust. Served with whipped cream or ice cream (or in an ideal world, both), it's just plain awesome on a plate.
Recipe and pictures... )
Our weekend to the cabin was abbreviated, although not by much. I got what I'm pretty sure is strep/flu combo and since I met Nolan there, had to make the two hour trip home by myself. Urgh. And since all I seem to be able to do since is sleep or stare, glassy-eyed at the television, propped up by pillows, I'd do a little photoessay of the two days we were in Childress.

There are too many commas in that sentence. My fever is too high to figure out what's wrong.

I should preface this post with the fact that I finally got a new camera. Thanks Dad and Jerry & Lanell. :D
Lots of pictures under here. As per usual. )

If you are inclined to do so, would you mind shooting up a prayer to the Big Guy? I haven't been this sick in a long time. Thanks!
We went to the family's cabin in Childress, TX (which is right between Quanah and Estelline, thanks for asking) for the long weekend. Below are the pictures to come out of it all.

Warning: There are a lot of pictures. I'm not kidding. A LOT. And there are cows. And strangely dressed children. And one victim of a hunting excursion. Be forewarned. I'm not listening to any whining.

The best thing about the cabin is that there's literally NO ONE AROUND. No people, that is. There are lots of cows. And deer. And cranes (minus one). And various other wildlife. You can imagine my moue of distaste on my face. But this weekend was fun. It was just the four of us. Well, six if you count the dogs. And we do.

Home, home on the range... )

And I showed restraint by only posting HALF the pictures. The other half got lost in my second crappy camera. I think I'll buy a new one with my birthday money. Then I can inflict GOOD cow pictures on you, and not the slightly blurry ones.
This week, I am the queen of fruit and sugar, and have prevailed (mostly) over all I have surveyed.
Plum Jam... the ambrosia of West Texas. )

I'll choose three random people (with one of those random generators to be fair) who comment of this entry, and I'll send you a jar, because I feel the need to spread the jam love.

Comment before Saturday morning at 10 am, central time.

I'll leave you with this.Cute kid pictures! )
It's image intensive. You've been warned. )
After five days at the cabin, we are home.

We got rained in. The county roads to get to our place are dirt, and if it rains more than a little, they're extremely hard to navigate without a four wheel drive. And sometimes even WITH a four wheel drive, you get stuck and have to have someone tow you out. So rather than risk THAT nightmare, we just toughed it out. I missed an appointment Monday morning, but other than that, it was a really lovely time. Family and friends came over on the fourth and we grilled and popped firecrackers until we were all too tired to keep our eyes open.

Pictures and post about the weekend forthcoming. There were more bugs, fireworks, fish, cows and kids than you can shake a stick at.

Whatever that means.  Childress makes me folksy. ;/

However, I will say that it is hard, sweaty, painful work to pick wild plums.

Wasps - 2, Carrie - 0 (Wasps are no respecter of persons. In my cleavage! The HORROR.)
Thorns 4,325, Carrie - 0
Plums - 0, Carrie - a gazillion

Pond water is... murky and suspicious.
And no matter how smart I think she is, my 12 year-old black Labrador retriever can't open doors for me when I lock myself out.

That about covers it, for now.  Tomorrow we start making those plums into JAM.  Wild Plum jam is SOOOOOOO good.

So we went to the cabin.

Y'all pull up a chair and have a glass of tea. This is a long damn story. )

You know what folks? THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME.

A truer word was never said.

Looks like I'm accompanying the family on a little weekend trip to our cabin in Childress. Frankly, I could used some down time. Yay. I'm gonna read, cook, and pay attention to my family.

Love to all!

Don't start anything without me!
My boys have gone with their grandparents to our Cabin in Childress until Thursday, so I'm on my own until then, and I'm sitting here, crying into my coffee because I miss them so much.

*snort of epic proportions*

No really, I love my kids; but I adore being alone.

In other news, the economic crisis has hit us, and hard. Nolan has had to lay off 15 of our employees in the last two months, and he feels like a failure, as if the lack of work available is somehow his fault. Intellectually, he knows it isn't, but he still feels responsible for the men and their families. He even went so far as to call around to other contractors, to find them jobs, and that was met with varying degrees of acceptance. I told him that he had to cut them a little slack, they'd been fired and had worries of their own. He's stressed and grumpy and stressed. Did I mention stressed? I keep telling him it's going to be okay; even if we have to downsize and sell the cars and move, he'll still have me and the boys, and we're all healthy. We're blessed. I don't know what more I can do for him.

In writing news, I am still plugging along at [livejournal.com profile] dg_ldws; it's a lot harder than I thought it would be, this drabble writing business. I've got one staring at me that's due tonight, and I'm simply not moved. That's always been my problem. My muse doesn't perk up on demand, and she gets distracted oh, so easily.

On the up side, I have lots of time and quiet to bang out 450 words. I think I'm also going to hit the shops and buy myself some new tennis shoes today. (Workout shoes? I don't play tennis, that's just always what I've called them.) The five miles a day is killing my feet.

So, have a lovely Tuesday, friends. I'm off to not hear children bickering for a few days. :)
Attention.  We've a new addition to THE LIST:

1.  Dolphins
2.  Squirrels
3.  Bunnies
4.  Grasshoppers

It's been one heck of a busy week.

My mom's been in town, I've had several meetings (unpleasant, at best) Ethan's gotten in trouble at school twice, and I may or may not have screwed up something (that I love) royally.  I just don't know.  On top of all that, my sweet Katie Belle (no, not you, [personal profile] elle_blessing) had to go to the vet again yesterday; she's on four different kinds of medications.  She is, thankfully, feeling much better today, I think, but I've been worried about her, nonetheless.

We leave this morning for our cabin, I think we'll be gone through Monday unless Nolan has to come back early for work.  Oh, I forgot.  Nolan. Nolan is having a bit of a mid life crisis.  I wish he'd just buy a car and have done with the whole thing.  Being moody and morose is just not cutting it for me.  I'm moody enough for the whole family, thankyouverymuch.

I also started a new project.

Aaaand it's [profile] embe11ished's birthday on Sunday!  *hugs*  I'm sending you a great bottle of virtual wine.  That really sounded better in my head.  Ah, well.  Best wishes, and I hope you have a lovely day.

My wonderful, sweet, handsome, adorable husband is leaving this afternoon with our two precious sons to go to our cabin.  Before you go getting jealous, the cabin is two hours away, in Childress, Texas, which is the birthplace of... well, nothing.  There's nothing there.  There's some antique stores, a Wal-Mart, and a mediocre Mexican food restaurant.  Anyway, the cabin (very nice, though) is on about 600 acres that we lease to a rancher, so there's cows.  The boys enjoy themselves; they go play outside and get dirty, and Nolan can hunt, when things are in season, pheasants, turkeys, deer, etc.  The outdoors is not really my bag, so when I go I mostly watch cable (something we don't have at home) cook, and sleep.  This weekend, they are planting trees, but I am tied up here in town with the show, So I can't go.

*pouts*

HA!  Not really!  I'm so excited about the prospect of being alone all weekend I can't SEE straight.  I think I'll go shopping, read, play on the computer, AND I went and got the next two discs of Firefly, so I'm going to rot my brain with that for sure.  I may even have the cast & crew over after the show tonight or tomorrow.  *thinks*  Must go get liquid refreshment if I do that.

Random:
1.  I have uploaded 105 userpics.  I'd have more if I had a bigger account.  However, as I'll probably never use all the ones I have, I'll stop, I guess.
2.  Bernadette Peters is supossed to be in Santa Fe over Labor Day...  really want to go to that.
3.  How wonderful is Olay Body wash with body butter ribbons? Pretty great, I say.
4.  It's cold and rainy in April.  I'm ready for warm weather!
