As I'm being currently entertained by my handsome husband playing the Nazi Zombies feature on the new X-Box 360 Black Ops game ("Stupid, goosestepping,Nazi Zombie, jackwagon pieces of crap!"), I thought I'd make a departure for looking up how to beat the silly game online for him and post something of substance.

Because among all the frivolity, a little substance must lie, right?

Or something.

Anyway, this is the time of year when the commercials and advertisements as a whole really step up their game and the tide of peace and goodwill overwhelms me. The result is that my normally misanthropic nature turns into a puddle of goo, and I'm forced to reach outside my nature and love my fellow man.

Or something.

I love to post a livejournal holiday wish list and fill wishes on others, but this year I'm thinking outside the scope of the internet. You've seen those pay it forward ads, right? Or you at least saw the movie, or at the very least understand the concept? I'm all about that. And I don't mind it starting with me, you know? Karma, baby!

Things you can do to start making the world a nicer place:

Pay it forward! )

Little things make a big difference. And a kind word means a lot.

I'm not in full panic mode, yet, but I can feel it lurking just around the corner.

After speaking to my mother-in-law on the phone this morning, the realization hit me: Thanksgiving is in 6 days.

Holy crap.

We're having Thanksgiving here again this year. And only 15 people as opposed to 25 last year. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE having people over. I love cooking. I love hospitality. But it's Thanksgiving. Forget the concept of actually giving thanks for two minutes and hang with me, here. IT'S A HOLIDAY ALL ABOUT THE FOOD.

And you know what? I love that. Bring it on. I'm currently defrosting a turkey in the outside fridge. Aside from that and a 15 minute conversation with the MIL this morning, I've done NOTHING to prepare.

So this is me: preparing.
listy stuffs and food-like pontification )

I don't think I'll panic. I think it's going to be just fine.
After thinking that today would be chock full of STUFF that I had to do, I find myself home, sipping on a homemade cafe mocha, and sitting.

*I like sitting.

*It annoys me when restaurant restrooms have some clever indication on the doors instead of simply reading "Women" or "Ladies." I don't want to think, I just want to pee. Thank God for the braille placards that have the right words.

*Sometimes yellow lights were meant to be run. Think about that, Amarillo drivers.

*I'm tired of all the pumpkin recipes, food blogs of the world. Gross. Please stop.

*Writing, after not having done so in nearly a YEAR, is hard. Really hard. I haven't lost the impetus, but I'm clearly out of practice.

*Carpooling is GENIUS. Whoever came up with it gets two gold stars and a kiss.

*My grandmother had a stroke last Wednesday, but is in therapy now and may even get to go back to her own home in a few weeks. I think that's brilliant and miraculous! Amen.

*Still disappointed in Bones and Castle. Boo, hiss.

*That science experiment list from a few posts back? The eight year-old's. I have bigger problems than I thought.

*I've started a new bag design, and it is CUTE. More work, but CUTE. Did I mention that it was cute?

*I've planted over 250 bulbs and separated a crapload of irises over the past few weeks. I want to see the flowers. Now. Alas, I won't get to until spring. Delayed gratification sucks out loud. Can anyone identify?

*The priority inbox feature on gmail is wonderful.

*Time to start thinking about Christmas shopping. I do so love making those lists.

*Don't forget to enter November's contest, HERE. Tell me what you're thankful for, and win a prize. Maybe. :D

I just found a paper in my office entitled "Top Secret Rocket Science Experiment," written in what I think is my ten year-old's handwriting.

It included a list:

1. clay
2. gas
3. mud
4. goo (?!)
5. baking soda
6. vinegar
7. sand
8. Coke
9. red food coloring
10. match
11. mini trampoline (?!)
12. wings (???)
13. cone

I'm torn between being proud that he's thinking outside the box, wondering if he's seen any Pinky and the Brain/Coyote & Road Runner cartoons and being very, very afraid.
I am continually amazed and appalled by the manners (table and otherwise) of people around me. Not just children, mind, but adults. ADULTS. Grown-up people who have been in society enough to observe the niceties around them, and yet fail to do so. In the hopes that one or more (or all) of them stumble across this humble little blog, I'd like to enumerate a few of the rules of good manners.

Being a lady is about being kind. It is also about choosing to believe the best in others and yourself.  )
