I just finished reading The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd.  I recommend it.  It's moving.  I was crying behind my sunglasses at the pool.

This passage, in particular, struck me.

"People, in general, would rather die than forgive.  It's that hard.  If God said in plain language, "I'm giving you a choice, forgive or die," a lot of people would go ahead and order their coffin."

Huh.  So true.  That's something to think about, isn't it?

I read that book a couple of summers ago. I really liked it. But I think I might like her other book better, the Mermaid Chair I think its called.

and yet, I don't know why. Maybe because we don't actually want to trust anyone enough to forgive them? That book has been sitting on my shelf for forever. I'm planning on getting to it this summer. It's nice to know it was good!

Forgiving IS hard. I like to lie to myself and think I can do it easily, or that I do it all the time... but then when I think of someone who has hurt or wronged me in some way, I can taste the anger. So clearly I'm not as good at it as I'd like to think I am.
