I have always been a little proud of my taste in music.  I thought it was at least unique, or a little special to someone of my age.  My musical leanings were very much influenced by my Dad and, oddly enough, my Stepfather (who had his issues, but his music was great) and by an older girl when I was a freshman in college.  She was 30, I was 18, and she took me under her wing and helped me out, and forced me to listen to classic rock.  I have come to discover that the music that I was so smug about knowing all of the lyrics to has become wildly popular.  It took my sons, my innocent little boys, to point this out to me.  The songs that I have on CD and listen to in the car and at home have become...  commercial.

I can't remember in what order it happened, but it started with The Who.  A five year old pipes up...  "That's from the T.V. show you watch, Mommy!"

*Mommy makes an effort to make sure said five year-old doesn't see any of the Las Vegas-y or Morgue-ish scenes from CSI and goes on*

It continued with Charlie's Angels.  Heart, Journey, Bon Jovi...I swear I have just about everything from that second movie. Kid's Movies.  The Monkees,  Elton John (& not just the stuff he wrote for Disney), R.E.M., and of course Freddie Mercury and Queen.  (Okay, they've been this way since Wayne's World, but still.)  Even The Beatles.

So I've come to the conclusion that the music that I like is all commercial.  Even AC/DC.  Aerosmith.  I'm no longer quirky.  No longer special, because all my favorites have either been Muzaked to shop to at the grocery store or splashed all over the latest movie soundtrack.  Fine.  But I'm still singing along.  It just a little unnerving when the preschool kids in the backseat are singing along, too.

Though, this morning they were singing along to Yellow Submarine, which is decidedly not commercial, and thinking about those two little voices yelling, "Sky of blue!  Sea of green!"  sends me into fits of giggles four hours later.

I have a pick-up rehearsal tonight (Maybe I should look at my script.  Maybe I should look FOR my script), and then start the second weekend of the show, can't wait to have pics to post!

"Two little voices yelling, Sky of blue! Sea of green!" - LOL I can't tell you how funny/cute that is. I laughed so hard reading your post coz I can relate to it so well!

It's actually great though...Classic Rock is the epitome of good music...today's stuff just can't compare. It's good that people recognize that there is some excellent music to be had from the past! I personally love lots of Classic Rock...Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd (though I don't think they're quite mainstream :), AC/DC definitely, and Queen to name a few.

I'm a music obsessed though and I like all kinds of music...especially original score soundtracks and celtic...so maybe I'm just being really accepting and expansive :)

Pink Floid isn't mainstream... himm... always thought that were. Love their stuff !

I think people know about Pink Floyd, but how many actually listen? Their music couldn't be mainstream no matter what you did to it...their albums are meant to be listened to from front to back, and the music is just...epic. The only album that is commercially accessible is Dark Side of the Moon, and even then, the singles are nothing like what you would think a mainstream song should sound like.

But hey, that's just my opinion. I like to think that Pink Floyd is just beyond mainstream because they are just that AMAZING :)

I have Wish You Were Here and parts of both The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall as well as some songs from earlier albums...But you know, the best thing ever was seeing the laser shows for DSotM and TW!

Regarding them being amazing - totally agree with you on that one.

The shame!!

My dear playwrighting teacher...that's music I listen to. xD

P.S.

Stupid Ringo Starr. Yellow Submarine is probably the only good thing that came of that man. And that's if you really think "Yellow Submarine" is a good thing.

I blame Ringo for society's problems.

CURSE YOU RINGOOOOOOO!!!!!

Re: P.S.

After singing the song this morning, Aaron said, "That's the stupidest thing I ever heard. Nobody lives in a submarine." To which Ethan replied, "Do they make yellow ones?"

So, no, Ringo. If the under 7 set have you figured out, you pretty much suck.

But the bands you mentioned are classics! Oldish maybe but classics all the same. Good taste is good taste whether it’s mainstream and commercialised or only sold out the back of the lead singer’s car.
Oh the fond memories that come from Yellow Submarine. Every time a school band came to my primary school only that and the Friend’s theme song was appreciated.
And for years I thought AC/DC and Acca Dacca were different bands *shakes head*

Yellow Submarine and the Friends' theme song. How sad!

The sad thing is, I used to go and enjoy live bands, independent music, and don't have time anymore.

But it's ageless music! True classics! Kids today are starting to pick up on that and along with their hip-hop rubbish they're listening to ACDC,Queen and others. I just got Mitch the entire ACDC collection on CD for Christmas. Maddy is a huge Queen fan and she's only 9. Tori still prefers the modern stuff and will argue that a song is the artists own, when it's clearly a cover - and I should know because I was singing along to it in the 80's ;)

I love that - when the kids catch you singing to something that you shouldn't know... being that you're musically uncool and all...

My favorite thing to do in my early twenties (I got the idea from a roommate) was to go to a bar and play David Bowie/Queen, "Under Pressure" and everybody would think that I had played that awful Vanilla Ice because he totally ripped off the first 8 bars. People would have to apologize for calling me lame! I would just laugh evilly!

There's nothing like watching E & A lip synch to "We Are the Champions." I think it's hysterical. Hubby, is less amused. :)

It's funny how that particular song is no longer one of their favorites once they realize you know every word ;)

You are evil! Imagine the poor audience thinking they were about to sit through a Vanilla Ice song *feels for them*

Lip synch? We get full sound from Maddy! She knows every word and she's actually encouraged by her father ;)
