lady_endymion. *Waves* It made me extremely happy.I was a spoiled rotten brat today. I'm not proud of it. I knew I was being stubborn and selfish at the time, I just couldn't pull myself out of it, y'know?
So. I'm on the board of directors for a charity/ministry here. The mission is to help children of poor families. I'm a BIG supporter of this; it isn't the kids' fault that their parents are poor, dont have jobs, are in prison, or worse. These are horrible, awful stories. I leave just about every board meeting we have in tears. My husband, while not on the board, is an active part. He picks up a carload of kids for church several nights a month, and has befriended several of the families, becoming extremely attatched to the kids.
There's one child in particular that he's fond of, we'll call him Derrick, that Nolan has reached out to. He's taken the boy fishing, to our cabin, and currently has the boy working for him at his business. Nolan's a great role model to this 15 year-old. He's never had any father figure in his life; the only man who has ever come close is currently in the hospital for stab wounds, I believe. (Horrid stories, I tell you.)
Anyway, Hubs ran out of stuff for Derrick to do at work, so he brought him home. To mow our yard. Nolan dropped him off, and gave him directions, and left. It was my job to make sure he did it correctly and to take him home. This (and this is where we come to the 'Carrie is a selfish cow' part of the day) interfered with my plans. I had arranged to have a playdate at the pool with other moms and kids, and having Derrick do our yard was screwing it all up. Never mind that I wasn't having to do it, never mind that we were saving money by paying a fifteen year-old and not a pro service, like usual.
Derrick calls us once a month to help his family out with groceries, or the gas bill or whatever, and Nolan's just always given them money. Not this month... Nolan decided we could give him a hand up, not a handout. Long story short (um, sort of), Derrick is a terrible yard-mower. It's not his fault, he'd never done it before. And I'm so anal and type A that I had him go over the places that he missed, both in the frony and the back yards, the whole time thinking, 'I could do this better than he could, this is taking too long, it's hot, and I have to drive him ALL the way across town when he finishes, and I'm missing all the fun at the pool!'
He finished. (It's still not great, but I'm getting over it.) I took him home. I still got to go to the pool, and had a lovely time, even if I didn't spend time with the families that I'd invited. Derrick learned how to mow and earned the money to pay his mother's gas bill. Nolan is far more generous than I, and probably needs to hold a seat on the board more than I do. So I was a brat, but it was only to myself, and I feel bad enough that I won't throw a fit again. Sometimes you need a couple of hours of perspective, I guess.

jandjsalmon, after we talked this morning and I said I 'didn't care', I totally dwelled on it for the rest of the day! However, two more added (today!) for the two that dismissed me, so when God closes a door, he truly does open a window. That is really cool!
